knife skills workshop march 29 1 p.m. - 2 p.m.

I watch in amazement when those television chefs are chopping vegetables. They do it so quickly without cutting themselves. This skill takes a lot of practice. You, too, can learn to chop like a chef at the Knives Skills workshop hosted by the Family and Consumer Science team at N.C. Cooperative Extension, Brunswick County Center.

This Knives Skills workshop will be held Tuesday March 29th from 1-2 p.m. in the training center at the Brunswick County Extension Center. This is located at 25 Referendum Drive, in the Government Complex in Bolivia.

Learning basic knife skills can increase your cooking confidence, plus will help you move faster and safer in the kitchen. Topics to be covered in the workshop include basic knife skills including how to properly hold a knife and perform several knife cuts. Staff will also talk about the importance of knife safety as well as how to sharpen and care for knives. Participants will apply what they’ve learned by making a salsa recipe together. 

Instructor for this class will be Meghan Lassiter, the Family and Consumer Science Extension Agent in Brunswick County. She will be assisted by Extension Master Food Volunteers. 

The Extension Master Food Volunteers recently met to sharpen (pun intended) their knife skills in preparation for this workshop. They also made and sampled the salsa to be prepared during the upcoming workshop.

Here are some basic knife SAFETY tips to remember:

S- Securely hold your knife. To get the most precision out of your knife, grip the handle close to the blade using a pinch grip.

A- Anchor your cutting board. Use a sturdy cutting board. It’s important to work off of an even surface. Use a cutting board with a nonslip grip on the back or place a damp cloth or paper towel under the cutting board to keep it from moving.

F- Fingers- curl fingers under and keep them out of the way of your knife. Use a claw grip to protect your fingertips on the hand you’ll use to hold the food.

E- Eyes- Keep your eyes on your cutting board and knife at all times.

T- Take Time to learn skills and don’t be in hurry when chopping.

Y-Yield to falling knives. During the workshop and at home, if you drop or lose control of the knife, don’t try to catch it if it falls off the counter. Simply step back as quickly as you can and let the knife fall to the floor before picking it up.

If you’d like to learn more about safely cutting and chopping and proper knife skills, but can’t attend the workshop, N.C. Cooperative Extension has several videos on-line you can watch. These can be found at NC State’s Homegrown website.

The registration fee for this the Knives Skills workshop is $5.00 and can be paid in advance with a credit card or the day of using cash or check. Space for this workshop will be limited to 20 people and based on a first come first serve basis. Register online by visiting the Eventbrite page or by contacting Lassiter. Registration closes on March 27th. 

Practice makes perfect, before long you’ll be slicing and dicing like a pro.
