This section offers resources and tools for local government and nonprofit organizations. Here you will find information on the function and structure of nonprofit boards, with advice from NC State University experts.

The modules provide Extension professionals with a ready-to-use teaching tool that can be used with new organizations just beginning to form their Board of Directors or as a refresher course for established boards.

How to Write Great Bylaws:  How to Write Great Bylaws is a presentation created to help new and old nonprofit organizations ensure that they are operating with a current and complete set of bylaws.

How to Start a NC NonprofitHow to Start  NC Nonprofit is a simple graphic representation of 12 steps to starting a nonprofit association in NC. It also contains links to other resources.

Nonprofit Roadmap to Success:  The  Nonprofit Roadmap to Success was created to help new and fledgling nonprofit organizations define goals and develop a roadmap to reach their objectives.

Transforming Board Practices:

The curriculum, “Transforming Board Practice”  is the result of an NC State University interdisciplinary partnership between the Institute for Nonprofits and Cooperative Extension. Its purpose is to improve the efficacy of boards of directors of nonprofit organizations throughout the State of North Carolina by encouraging a culture of inquiry among board members and generating robust and honest discussion of all issues and concerns affecting their organization.

The curriculum contains eight PowerPoint modules and a facilitators guide. Each module in this curriculum may be delivered independently of the others. However, each one’s content will be greatly enhanced by delivery of all the modules. We strongly suggest that new boards start with this first module and complete the entire curriculum in the order presented.
