URGENT SCAM ALERT: NORTH EASTERN NC SENIORS 🚨

The Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) is warning Medicare beneficiaries in our region about a new, high-pressure cold-call scam targeting your personal information.

🛑 The Scam: “Donald Trump Medicare Program”

Scammers are calling local seniors claiming to represent a “Trump Medicare program.” They are promising:

  • $800–$900 per month in grocery benefit cards.
  • Significant discounts on prescription drugs.
  • Fake Deadlines: They claim you must apply by the end of February or March 31 to create panic.

✅ The Truth

  • There is no “Trump Medicare” grocery program. This is a fraudulent tactic used to steal your identity or deceptively enroll you in a different insurance plan.
  • Medicare will NEVER call you uninvited. Government agencies like Medicare and Social Security do not cold-call you to sell plans or offer “bonus” cash cards.
  • The “Grocery Card” Hook: While some legitimate Medicare Advantage plans offer small food allowances for specific health conditions, no government program gives a $900 monthly grocery card to everyone.

🛡️ How to Stay Safe

  1. Hang up! If someone calls you out of the blue talking about a “Trump grocery card,” it is a scam. Just hang up immediately.
  2. Don’t answer unknown numbers. Let them go to voicemail.
  3. Protect your info. Never give your Medicare number, Social Security number, or bank details to an unsolicited caller.
  4. Verify with a local expert. If you have questions about a benefit, call your local Chowan County SHIIP site.
