The 70th Annual Chowan County 4-H Livestock Show and Sale was held on Tuesday, April 16th at the American Legion Fairgrounds. Fifty-three Chowan County youth participated in the event this year. There were thirty-eight hog exhibitors, ten goat exhibitors and five lamb exhibitors.

We had eight high school seniors participate in the Livestock Show this year! Karley Byrd (Lawrence Academy), Hannah Harris (John A. Holmes High School), Ben Monds (John A. Holmes High School), Hannah Nixon (John A. Holmes High School), Amaris Oliver (John A. Holmes High School), Adrianna Parrish (John A. Holmes High School), Brayden Pippins (John A. Holmes High School), and Jaiden Walters-Bradley (John A. Holmes High School). Congratulations to the Class of 2024!

Chowan FFA organized our Barn Buddies Show this year, in partnership with the Edenton Chowan Schools Exceptional Children’s Department. Students from White Oak Elementary were paired with a lamb or goat livestock exhibitor. Students and livestock exhibitors walked around the show ring together and then were presented with a medal. Great job Barn Buddies!

The order of events for the livestock show were: Cloverbud Hogs, Hog Market, Cloverbud Goats, Goat Market, Goat Showmanship, Cloverbud Lambs, Lamb Market, Lamb Showmanship, Hog Showmanship. We had ten Cloverbud exhibitors showing three goats, three lambs and four hogs. Cloverbud exhibitors are between the ages of 5 and 7. They do not compete in market classes, but they gain experience in the show ring by answering the judge’s questions and walking their animals around. Youth ages 8 to 18 compete in market and showmanship classes. Awards were given for Grand, Reserve and Third place animals in market competition. First, Second, and Third place awards were given for both junior and senior showmanship classes.

The Grand Champion hog was exhibited by Camryn Pippins, daughter of Mike and Alison Pippins. The Reserve Champion hog was exhibited by Brayden Pippins, son of J.P. and Megan Pippins. The Third Place hog was exhibited by Chloe Chappell, daughter of Quintin and Melissa Chappell. Senior Hog Showmanship awards went to: 1st Place – Camryn Pippins, 2nd Place – Laine Goodwin, and 3rd Place – Chloe Chappell. Junior Hog Showmanship awards went to: 1st Place – Jase Goodwin, 2nd Place – Alana Brumfield, and 3rd Place – Emma Nixon. Camryn Pippins was also presented the 2024 Willis Ray Byrum Senior Showman trophy.

The Grand Champion lamb was exhibited by Sydney Eure, daughter of Towe and Allison Eure. Sydney also received First Place in Junior Showmanship. The Reserve Champion lamb was exhibited by Jaiden Walters-Bradley, daughter of Paul and Sarah Bradley. Jaiden also received First Place in Senior Showmanship.

The Grand Champion goat was exhibited by Amaris Oliver, daughter of John and Jessica Oliver. The Reserve Champion goat was exhibited by Adrianna Parrish, daughter of Carey and Rosanna Parrish. The Third Place goat was exhibited by Karley Byrd, daughter of Steven and Stephanie Byrd.
